1.  I WAS  A TOUR GUIDE IN EUROPE

map

I was shocked when I scored a job as a tour guide for BUSABOUT  EUROPE as Tour Guide (this is where I met Renee our PLUS SIZE BRIDE and inadvertently introduced her to Jason who is now her fiance). This is A LOT of travel and I’d stay in a different city every night. It was tough living as a backpacker for a year but the great news is I  can get myself (and a group of 51 passengers if needed around all the cities on that Busabout map)! Plus I can do an awesome 30 minute speil on anything from the French Revolution to Berlin to Monaco. There’s a lot of European facts jammed into my brain that pop out every now and again.

2.  I  ONCE DIDN’T TALK FOR  10 DAYSvipassana

Even though i’m a radio announcer and literally get paid to talk. After getting made redundant before Christmas one year I decided to go on a meditation retreat called  VIPASSNA in the BLUE MOUNTAINS. It involved  staying silent for 10 days, eating vegetarian and not making eye contact. I pretty much hated every minute and as soon as I got out got on the phone and ate a bacon and sausage breakfast. No more meditation for  me!

3.
MY FAMILY’S NAMES ALL START WITH ‘K’

KThis was way before the Kardashians (I was born in the 70s for crying out loud). Let me tell you that in the 80s it was NOT ‘cool’ or ‘cute’ it and  just plain embarrassing. Even our initials match! I’m KKG my sister is KGG!  At the time I wasn’t a fan but now I like it. Yes, my Mum and Dad’s first names both start with ‘K’!

4. I CAN’T DRIVE A MANUAL

toy

My family only had automatics when I was learning to drive.  One year I bought myself a manual car thinking I could learn but  ‘broke it’ on the first day. I’ve been far too scared to try ever since! I can do the hand coordination on gear changes  but not the feet. I returned the car I broke and paid for it to be fixed. After that  I used public transport for 3 years.  I find driving a ‘stick’ super sexy so I’m annoyed that I can’t do it. I’d love to fang about in a SUV (it would have to be an automatic of course!)

5.  MY SISTER AND I SOUND IDENTICAL

My sister’s husband can’t tell our voices apart on the phone and neither can my parents! The good news is that if I quit  radio my sis could take over and no one would know.

6. I WILL NEVER  HAVE SHORT HAIR {AGAIN}

winonaI got a short haircut to look like Winona Ryder in REALITY BITES but and ended up looking absolutely awful. I  couldn’t even hold back the tears before I left the salon chair and even paid full price for that dodgy haircut!  Ever since then I’ve gone for a  long layered look.  This curly haired girl learnt her lesson the hard way and can NOT rock a short sassy hair do (unlike Winona Ryder who still looks cool!)

7. I’VE HAD 37 HOUSEMATES IN 13 YEARS IN 4 COUNTRIES

Okay, so that includes 8 flatmates in one 3 storey mansion in London but I’ve traveled and worked overseas quite a lot. Multiple cities in the USA, UK, AUS. Means I have lots of fun people to stay with overseas!

8. I’VE LIVED IN A TENT AND ON BOAT

boat

I worked at a summer camp and lived in a ‘platform tent’ i.e a 4 person canvas tent on a wooden palate with 4 camp beds. It was a great summer and I loved it.  I spent three months working in Croatia on a tour guide and lived on a boat that sailed around the islands. I’ve never had so many free cocktails and seafood in my life!

9. MY FIRST JOB WAS AT A BOWLING ALLEY

As soon as I could legally work I did. I was 15 and my Mum had to drive me. This was in the 90s when you could still smoke indoors. Part of my job was to  hand wash the ashtrays (gross).

10. I LISTEN TO 40HRS OF MUSIC A WEEK!AFTRS RADIO 2

As a radio host, I’m on air 30hrs a week and either sitting in a sound proof studio talking to myself or taking callers for the Love Song  Dedication show.  So i’m listening to music constantly. Trust me if there’s a music trivia night on at the pub you’d want me on your team. It’s amazing what facts are nestled in that musical part of my head. As soon as I’m in my car I flip to a CD (girl’s gotta have a break.
