50 Fat Dates follows my quest to find Big Curvy Love (girlfriend’s in her thirties and looking for a man…don’t judge.) I’ve challenged myself to go on 50 dates over the course of one year and share my dating stories, plus size dating tips and lessons learned. If this is your first visit make sure to catch up!~Kelly
My first experience of speed dating was a complete mess and it honestly felt like I was being punk’d. I had fleeting thoughts that my plus size punani might actually close over and I would end up celibate. If this actually happened then at least I’d never have to mow the lady garden again and could wear comfy full cotton briefs guilt free for the rest of my life! A girl’s got to look on the positive side, right?
In the name of 50 Fat Dates I decided to put on a brand new pair of plus size panties (not full cotton briefs) and get myself back out there in the dating pool.
This time I chose a different company that promised ‘up to 25 dates’ on a Wednesday night in downtown LA. Please take note of the words ‘up to’ as there were a mere 12 men in this round of speed dating. It’s like those sales where the sign says “75%off” and ‘up to’ in teeny tiny letters. Even though there were more women than men I remained hopeful as it only takes a single yes.
Each speed date was 3 minutes and we had a sheet of paper to mark either ‘yes’ or ‘no’. I met a truck driver called Jesus, a probation officer, an elementary teacher who kinda seemed gay (but didn’t know it.) They were all attractive, made an effort and seemed to be nice guys, but rather than looking for my ‘right now’ guy I’m trying to think or my ‘future’ guy.’
The first three were a ‘no’ and then I met an instant ‘yes.’ If I was only allowed to choose one date out of the entire group it would be him, however, I was so caught up in conversation that I didn’t find out #4s age. I felt as though he might be around 25 so if he says yes I’ll have to find out his age quickly before one of us catches feelings (usually me.) Since I’m in my mid thirties I really want someone on the same track as me so they would need to be at least thirty.
I’m pretty excited to see if #4 aka my ‘yes man’ likes me back but I have to wait another two days for the email from the speed dating company. I also said ‘yes’ to another guy but I’ll be honest and say he’s my second choice. Overall it’s a bit of a crap shoot and I can’t see myself continually attending these events in an effort to meet someone. I do suggest it as a fun once off but also recommend you go alone and not with girlfriends.
The unspoken element of speed dating is the underlying female competition. I always end up talking to the other girls and curious as to whether they chose the same guys as me. At this event the other girls didn’t want to reveal their choices in men but the event organizer let it slip that that I had one ‘yes’ in common with each of two the girls I sat next to. Suddenly it felt a lot more competitive (what if #4 was on their list and he dated the three of us!?) It started to feel a bit like an episode of the bachelor so I finished off my Mojito and rode the metro back to Hollywood to pick up my car from the penthouse.
50 Fat Dates is getting busy as I only have one night off before my next date which is date #4 with the reader who asked me out, Drew. I posted a should I date him poll and he scored 94.52% YES. I’m really looking forward to this date too! Check back to see if my ‘yes man’ said yes back and how my reader date with Drew went.
