QUESTION: How do I help my curvy daughter love her curves?
Firstly, good on you for asking this question and I’m so happy your daughter has a Mum like you to help her!
I’m not sure how old your daughter is but regardless my first piece of advice is to point out beautiful and successful curvy and plus size celebrities and ask her opinion on them. I’m talking about Adele, Oprah, Rebel Wilson, Queen Latifah, Melissa McCarthy or whomever she is into. You could do this by flicking through magazines, watching telly or a movie.
These women are fantastic role models. If she see’s the value and beauty in them then you’ll be able to compare it to hers and help her create a connection between the two. Show her how others react to these celebs and how loved they are. Tell her: “If people love, respect and are attracted to x,y,z celeb, why don’t you think they’d be attracted to you?”
Also, if your daughter likes any of those celebs fashion styles why not find an outfit she likes and do a ‘steal her style’ outfit shopping day with her.
I suggest having a look at plus size fashion, let me tell you there’s a lot more cool, sexy and fun plus size clothing available now than when I was a teen or even in my 20s. If she’s down on herself in that area. Whip up a Pintrest page with clothes you think she might like and show her those. Here’s my Plus Size Fashion board if you want a quick start. Once your daughter realizes she can dress her curves with up-to-date fun fashion this will change her life for the better.
Sometimes its hard to truly see ‘yourself’ but often you can understand through other people’s experiences.
