READER SUBMISSION: I’m a Latina 41-year-old single mom of two.  This story is from 1 year after ending my marriage when I was 33. Back during these years there was “phone dating” lines also known as “party lines” as internet dating had not hit.  This was in the last years of texting only phones and not the data phones where we can share pics.

I met a man I decided to accept a date with.  We met a Fridays and it was busy as normal. As we sat in the waiting area there were families and others on dates.  We talked and a toddler decided to run to me and hug me.  He instantly became upset that our conversation was interrupted.  He was curt and asked if I went there often since people were “too nice” to me… stemming from friendly parents that let me hug the baby back.

Needless to say I felt like I needed to keep my eyes only on him, I couldn’t be nice to the waiter or I received more of the angry questions/comments.

After coming out from a very jealous and mentally abusive marriage I decided then and there THIS I will not ALLOW in my life again.  I paid for the food I ordered and didn’t wait for it to arrive and headed back to my car.  He tried following me and I stopped him with a glare and the “I’m not good with ALL that was going on” and I turned on my heel and left.

That was the moment I decided to drive myself to every date. I don’t date very much  but I always pay my own bill and meet as a “friend” date.  If I/we want to pursue it further after establishing a healthy friendship then we’d take it from there.

The dating life for us 2nd Generations (divorced) plus size gals has been quite an experience.  I’m actually happier single with minimal pangs of a boyfriend/girlfriend to feel “complete.”  Maybe I keep myself busy to not feel void and the dedication to my children make it balanced more than not?  OR it’s the crazies I’ve encountered – I’m not all that normal myself but there certainly have been some much crazier.  Ha! *nervous laugh
