50 fat dates50 Fat Dates follows my quest to find Big Curvy Love (girlfriend’s in her thirties and looking for a man…don’t judge.)  I’ve challenged myself to go on 50 dates over the course of  one year and share my dating stories, plus size dating tips and lessons learned. If this is your first visit make sure to catch up!~Kelly

It’s official!  I’ve got on my fatkini and am diving into the deep end of the dating pool without a life vest. After months of planning I’m finally venturing out on my 50 Fat Dates quest and decided to kick off date #1 at a speed dating event.  This is a regular dating event (not plus size) so I’m interested to see the reaction of men and if they’re open to dating a big girl or avoid it like the Louis CK fat girl episode last week.

For my first speed dating event I chose the Saturday night Single Professionals in their 30s & 40s group where I’m assured I’ll get introduced to between 10-15 single guys. The dates are 5 minutes which is longer than I thought (anyone else think these things were 3 mins?) 5 minutes can be a long awkward time so we’ll see how it plays out.

Here’s how it works: The gals stay seated and the guys switch tables every 5 minutes.  Each speed dater gets a dating card and marks whether they want to see the person for a date (check box yes or no). If at the end of the night both parties say yes then you get the other person’s info the next day.

Full disclosure: this is my first dating event. I’m not worried about what I’ll wear (cute purple v-neck short dress) meeting new people (I talk to strangers all the time) I’m worried that no guys will say ‘yes.’  The 24hour waiting to find out will be the worst part. I think my plan will be to say ‘yes’ to every single date that way I can find out who said ‘yes’ or ‘no.’

How to prepare: I need to set some rules for myself before I go. As a former syndicated radio announcer who’s job was to host a love song dedication show I’m very experienced in interviewing people. I must remember not to ‘grill’ the guys. Not to fill the silence with talking and ‘carry’ the conversation.

Will I get ‘yesses’?

Is 5 minutes too long?

Will I be the only fat girl in the room?

Speed dating night is Saturday. I expect the results on Sunday so check back!

Good luck. I can’t wait to hear about it. I’ve never done speed dating.
